Fast becoming a favourite, the delicious peppery leaves are now a widely used kitchen essential. Grow your own fresh leaves in patio pots and tubs for convenient picking and give a new dimension to flavours and textures in the salad bowl. Use as ‘cut and come again’ baby leaves to extend the harvest period.

Outdoor Sowing

Sow thinly, direct into 25cm (10in) apart. Cover with 0.5cm (quarter inch) of fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist. Seedlings appear in 7 - 14 days. For continuous crops sow every 2 - 3 weeks.
Sow: April to August in Partial Shade, Harvest September and October and May to October the following year.

Growing on

For baby leaf no thinning is required. For mature plants, when large enough thin to 10cm (4in) apart. Keep moist and do not allow plants to dry out, this prevents them running to seed. Pick individual leaves as required, taking a few leaves from each plant, they will regrow for up to 3 or 4 cuts.

Tip: Add to other salad leaves for a stronger flavour salad.
